Mario Kart Wii

In the days of old, you could buy a racing game and hope that a friend would come over to race against you. In modern times there is no need to wait for a friend, you can go online and race against strangers. It is not as bad as it sounds; Nintendo has made sure that no private information can be exchanged. On an additional note, players have the option of adding a Mario Kart Wii channel to their Wii Menu so they can add friend codes and check friend, event and tournament status without the game disc being in the Wii.

Since the release of the Wii and the introduction of the Mii, Nintendo had made available the option of Miis appearing in thier biggest competitive games. Mario Kart Wii is no different. First, players are issued a driver's license featuring their Mii. Once players get to a specific point in the game, they gain they ability to drive as their Mii in some new vehicles.

On the game play front, Nintendo has made sure all types of players will be comfortable with playing Mario Kart Wii. Players can use the steering wheel sold with the game as well as the WiiMote alone, the WiiMote and nunchuku, the WiiMote and Classic Controller and the GameCube Controller. For those players used to playing with a controller, there is almost no learning curve. For those wishing to use the new control methods of play, take time to practice. There should be a note made, there is no more hopping and if players wish to control their drift for a mini-turbo, they must use the manual drift option.

The visuals in this game are par for the course. Other than updated graphics when bringing old racetracks up to date, there are no real surprises. The imagery and details are comparable to previous Mii-friendly games. It looks good, but there is nothing truly new.

The game audio is a mix of the classic with the new. While the character voices are nothing new, the Miis are given voices. The problem is, some voices do not necessarily fit with the Mii. A thin, short person should not sound like Isaac Hayes. The music for the classic racetracks has been updated and the new music is catchy. It is almost worth not racing and just letting the game run to listen to the music. Consider the fact the game's audio is in Dolby 5.1 sound, everyone wins!

The fear for this game was it would end up like Mario Vs. Sonic at the Olympic Games. The fans of this series wanted a true online multi-player experience and not a race against a number of ghosts simply to earn a ranking. Lucky for us all, this game is a true online multi-player where players can compete against friends, their region and the world. To top it off, two players can compete together over the Internet on the same Wii.

If you loved the original Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Mario Kart 64 on the Nintendo 64 and Mario Kart Double Dash on the Nintendo GameCube, then this game is for you. If you do not love it, at least you got a plastic wheel for your effort.

Super Smash Brother Brawl

It has been over six years since the last Super Smash Brothers (SSB) game. In those six years, technology has greatly changed. There is now Internet game play, enhanced graphic processing, surround sound and characters that are not even Nintendo properties. Six years ago, who would have ever though that Sonic the Hedgehog would ever be in a game with Mario, let alone a game where they could fight each other? Throw in Snake from Metal Gear Solid and you have yourself a party.

Let us start with graphics and sound. Nintendo had a decent habit of providing quality graphics and sound. Graphically speaking, that game was built for high definition televisions, but still works on standard definition. The game auto-detects your television settings. The picture is crisp, the detail is better than ever and the movement of the characters is vastly more fluid over the previous SSB games. The sound quality is great. On a surround sound stereo system, you can really differentiate character sounds from background sounds and music. The characters are voiced by their current voice actors for their respective series; this includes Snake and Sonic. My only issue with the entire game is that when the characters are far apart from each other during a match, it becomes hard to see them in larger stages.

There are so many features to this game that it must be separated into categories in line with how the game works.

The first menu option is Group. There is the standard Brawl option where two or more players can duke it out. A Rotation option where up to 16 players can take turns brawling. The Rules option is for the setting of the default rules for each brawl. There is the classic Tournament mode with a twist as to how many characters compete in each match. The return of the Special Brawl, but this time the options can be piled upon each other. Finally, the Names option, this allows players to have names instead of P# tags. It is primarily used for record keeping.

The second menu option is Solo. There is the Classic mode where you compete against a number of opponents in multiple rounds. The Stadium mode consists of mini-games such as a home-run contest and a multi-man brawl for two players. The Adventure mode is known as the Subspace Emissary, a long story mode involving all of the game's characters. Next is the Training mode so players can practice with each character. Finally, an Events mode allows two players to meet various challenges.

The third option is the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. You can battle With Friends or With Anyone. With Friends allows players to Brawl, Team Multi-man Brawl and play Home-run Contests. With Anyone allows players to engage in Basic Brawls, Team Battles or watch a match via the Spectator mode. It is recommended you have a broadband connection and for the best quality, it should be a hardwire connection, rather than wireless.

The fourth menu option is the Vault. Players can check out their Sticker and Trophy collections, watch game Replays, use the Stage Builder, play demos of Masterpieces, view the Album, read the Nintendo Chronicle and see the Challenges met.

The fifth and final menu option is Options & Data. It is the normal picture and sound adjustment area and includes the ability to view Records, Movies and a Sound Test.

This game has earned a perfect rating from numerous sources and there is a good reason for that. Here is to hoping the trend keeps up for any future SSB games.

Jump Ultimate Stars

This game is from Japan and its dialog is mainly in Japanese. American distributors will not sell this item because the licensing for the characters in the game is held by numerous companies in the United States. In Japan, licensing for all of the characters in the game is held by the Weekly Shonen Jump (WSJ) and Nintendo. You may only be able to buy the game via web sites such as eBay or Play-Asia.

This game is the second in what will become a series of anime fighters from between the covers of the WSJ magazine. The game opens with a movie showing a pirate taking Goku, Luffy, Naruto and other characters into an alternate dimension to fight a great battle. For a flashy opening on the Nintendo DS, there is none better. People often compare this game and its prequel to a handheld version of an manga-based Super Smash Brothers.

The game sports roughly, three-hundred characters divided by each of the 41 series, 3 natures, 8 levels and 3 types. The series are both a mixture of known and unknown manga in America, including Dragonball, Naruto, Yu-Yu-Hakusho, Yu-Gi-Oh, Ultimate Muscle and so much more. The natures are defined as power, knowledge and laughter. It works like rock, paper and scissors.

Levels range anywhere from one to eight and as players use the evolution feature, characters can grow to different types. Characters all start as level one help characters, they then grow into support characters and then into battle characters. The difference is based on their actual involvement in the game. Help characters normally provide items, support characters show up briefly to fight and battle characters are controlled by the players.

There are four main play modes. The story mode is known as J-Universe. The Battle mode is known as J-Arena. Anything Wireless or Wi-Fi is located via the J-Wireless mode. Once unlocked, there is a quiz mode. Unlike the prequel, players must build a 20-panel character page that they use during fights in a mode called the Deck Maker. Evolving characters from one level to the next is done via the J-Power mode. The Data options allow players to view unlocked content and the Options mode is to set the game options.

The game utilizes the voice, sound and music talents from each series, if available. Some manga in the WSJ magazine have yet to become television anime series. The artwork, design and sound are all top notch for a handheld game. It would be hard for anyone to claim that they had seen better.

Overall, if players are willing to read translated player's guides available over the internet and find the price acceptable, they will not be disappointed. This game is not quantity over quality; it is a nice balance of both. If players have no friends who own the game, single card support for up to three additional players is possible. The Wi-Fi adds extra value, but keeps in mind that the core player-base is in Japan and lag may occur the further players are from their opponents.
